About Abilis
Abilis: Building Able Lives and Strong Communities
Abilis is a non-profit organization that provides assistance to adults and children with developmental disabilities and their families in lower Fairfield County, CT, and parts of Westchester County, NY. The organization is committed to building able lives and strong communities in a caring and nurturing environment.
At Abilis, the focus is on person-centered services that are innovative, collaborative, and respectful. The team at Abilis works closely with individuals with developmental disabilities to understand their unique needs, strengths, interests, goals, and aspirations. Based on this understanding, Abilis develops customized plans that help individuals achieve their full potential.
The services provided by Abilis include early intervention programs for infants and toddlers; educational programs for school-aged children; vocational training programs for adults; residential support services for those who need it; recreational activities that promote socialization; advocacy services that help individuals access resources they need to thrive in the community.
One of the key strengths of Abilis is its team of highly trained professionals who are passionate about making a difference in the lives of people with developmental disabilities. The team includes licensed therapists (speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists), special education teachers (certified by Connecticut State Department of Education), job coaches (who work closely with employers to create inclusive workplaces), direct support professionals (who provide one-on-one support to individuals), case managers (who coordinate services across different providers).
Another strength of Abilis is its commitment to innovation. The organization constantly seeks new ways to improve its services through research-based practices. For example:
- In 2019-2020 academic year alone over 100 staff members received professional development training.
- In 2020 we launched our first virtual summer camp program which was very successful.
- We have implemented telehealth therapy sessions during COVID pandemic which allowed us not only continue providing therapy but also reach more clients than before.
Abilis also values teamwork as an essential component of its success. The organization collaborates closely with families/caregivers/guardians/advocates/community partners/school districts/employers/local government agencies etc., recognizing that everyone has a role to play in creating inclusive communities where people can participate fully regardless of ability level.
Finally yet importantly - respect - it's one word but it means so much! At Abilis we believe every person deserves respect no matter what their abilities or challenges may be!
In conclusion: If you or someone you know needs assistance navigating life's challenges due to developmental disability please contact us today! We would love nothing more than helping you build an able life within your community!
