Rather a disappointment I'm afraid. Poor availabilty of vegetarian menu items for my wife and what was available lacked any sophistication. Although my shepherds pie was tastey the accompanying vegetebles were very sparse and it appeared to be only half a meal. Inattentive staff meant we gave up waiting for dessert and went elsewhere. A little pretentious so we won't be returning.

From the outside this little hidden gem doesnt do it justice on how spacious, light and airy it is. We arrived from up North for a few days and felt the big shopping complex with its designer bars too overcrowded. Luckily we find abarbistro in the old town and had the best experience. The food was to die for, one fish dish and a meat dish, fabulous and then chocolate brownie heaven! Thank you to the lovely team, will def return.

Was expecting so much from this independent restaurant but sorely disappointed with our first visit. Very limited menu choice for food and pretty pricey. Fish and chips were tasteless and other dishes were disappointing. To their credit, the drinks list is extensive and the staff are friendly and attentive which was a redeeming feature. Hope to visit again and improve my anticipations.

Great tasting food from a seasonally changed menu. The surroundings are of superb quality, perfect for a lovely slap up meal, or just drinks if you wish. They have an excellent selection of wines with knowledgeable staff to help you choose.

It has a very friendly environment and first class service. The outside seating areas (front and back) are most enjoyable in the summer months.

My favorite lunch spot in Portsmouth. Best and freshest seafood. A building housing American captains during the Civil War, Mussels and the greatest fish and chips. Yummm. At the dockside.

I was treated to a fantastic birthday lunch here. The mussels were very tender and of a decent size (better than they often are on the Isle of Wight). The mariniere sauce was a little too rich for me and I couldn't finish it but I thoroughly enjoyed the meal. The malbec by the glass was excellent and the service was very attentive. Lovely place for a special (or just a casual) meal.

We have visited Abarbistro a few times in the past to find we are always ignored at the bar in favour of regular customers or those who are of a particular clientele. This review by the way is with reference to 2 particular barmen who blatantly ignored us after making eye contact and decided to divert their attention elsewhere. One was drying glasses and the other served a customer next to us then turned his back when he knew we were clearly waiting to be served. I could understand having to wait if it was busy but it wasn t and this was demonstrated by their pig ignorance.
We will not be visiting here again and will take our custom elsewhere as we didn t enjoy the experience given by the pretentious unwelcoming staff who manage the bar.

Stopped in for lunch before catching the ferry and wow, really impressed. Easy parking outside, nice decor, good service, great selection of wines and the specials and mains were both fantastic for what felt like a very reasonable price. Will make it a point to come back when I m down this way again!

The restaurant is a bit cramped with the maximum amount of tables which makes it really noisey. The food was really nice not over pricey. The reason why I am only giving two stars is because. After the starter and main came out which was really slow. This is not the fault of the servers. We were told that we could order deserts but we would have to eat them really quick as the table was booked for another group. So we had to pay before we got them and eat and Finnish our drinks to accommodate the manager. This we thought was really bad. Therefore we won't be going back.

Brilliant place. Great food and service and the largest display of giant wine bottles I've ever seen. Fish and chips were fantastic, great value for the area too. Service was faultless. Especially as they took care of use after being let down by the spice island

My local and I love it. After 20 years I still want to love it. Sadly, last week I visited with a friend for lunch and the quality (not up to usual standard), portion size (which was mean) and cost (too much for too little) were compromised. Come back to the good old standard we know you are capable of please Abar, too much competition to let slip!

This place is run by a family who've shown that they know how to run places in the Portsmouth area. Apparently it used to be the American Bar, hence the current name, but I digress. The food and drink here are both a very decent standard. Today, we had cuttlefish with avocado in a [lovely] chilli and lime dressing, crevettes with lemon mayo and pitta bread with garlic humus. Would recommend.

What's always obvious here is that's it's pretty well managed and has staff that care, its clean and tidy and well supported, tho at a fiver a pint of guiness that should be a given. Next to the ferry and worth a visit.

The food here is great, however the service was lacking. We were sat down for a good 10mins before another couple arrived and although we had the same waiter they were served first, for the rest of the night they were given preferential treatment and free drinks (we think they were related to another one of the waiters).
