I requested a bid for retrofitting central AC on an old house. Rodney, the sales rep, was friendly and prompt and looked things over and took measurements and said he'd get back to me to present a proposal.

When he came back to present the proposal, he showed us a series of options on his laptop. It was going well, the options looked good. I asked for a written version to think it over. He said he could not provide a written proposal. I said that was a deal-breaker. He offered to come out to show us the powerpoint any time I wanted to see it, but he would not be able to provide anything in writing.

I've never had a contractor seeking to work on my home refuse to provide a written estimate.
