Went regularly for the 2014 season and was not impressed, nor did I feel that, for a city of Atlanta's size, that there was anything special about the ASO. While the musicians are talented, the venues were generally basic and boring. They SciFi Spectacular was the highlight of the season, along with the Morehouse Christmas special. The facility itself is in need of some upgrades. I recall glancing at the ceiling and its clear that it is not being kept up properly. Maybe this is because they are doing a major rehab with a recent gift? Additionally, the ASO seems like it isn't attracting the traditional respectful symphony lover, that is, on many occasions, I saw people texting, having discussions, eating (and crinkling potato chip bags,) which I thought wasn't the norm for this type of venue. Generally, when I attended, it was never sold out, which is disappointing. Same for the alliance theatre. maybe the fault that the ASO is not popular is due to poor higher level management lacking adequate experience ? I'm not sure- that's a wild guess, as I don't even know the management. However, i'm sure if you were to ask an experienced Symphony goer, they would agree with at least some of my opinions. I disliked it, but will give it 3 stars due to the extremely friendly and positive front-line staff and volunteers. Maybe ATl is not a 'Performing Arts' type of city in ref to the support from the community?
