At the time of opening, the Rion-Antirion Bridge was the world's longest cable-stayed bridge. The idea of building this bridge arose in the 19th century. It was put into service in 2004, just before the opening of the Athens Olympics. It was built in very difficult conditions because it is a place where strong earthquakes occur, very strong winds blow, the sea bottom is unstable and the depth reaches 65 meters. The bridge pillars should also withstand the impact of a tanker. The total length of the bridge is 2452 m
