I had the opportunity to visit the old complex of the former Forlanini Hospital now part of the San Camillo Forlanini Hospital, on the site of the complex now in disuse, a shelter for the homeless until recently now vacated (at least it seems) and supervised by ad hoc staff, now includes only two services of the Company, namely the Pharmacy and Pharmacy Warehouse and Nuclear Medicine, all the rest is abandoned to degradation, perhaps used as a set of films in sporadic cases and the scene of small evictions of material and small furnishings , there should still be a small museum now closed and perhaps under maintenance. The complex is huge, built during Fascism, it had moments of success and then it was decided to abandon it by incorporating it into the Company that maintained Nuclear Medicine for practical reasons related to the control of radioactive materials produced therein, as well as maintaining what should have been a the pride of the site and the Pharmacy as it is in any case very close to the departments of San Camillo and the free spaces are always useful. The architectural complex of thousands of cubic meters is imposing, the park around it adequately large, obviously all extremely dilapidated but with a poignant charm, the whole on an undoubtedly monumental level. In other places in the world, a complex of this architectural, historical and social value would not be left to destroy itself, it would be as if the French State let Versailles go down the drain and I exaggerate only a little. One of the vigilantes suggested a museum use of the site, I imagine a rich display of the thousands of pieces that mold in the numerous deposits scattered around Rome, clear that it would take the use of huge capitals for the renovation and the setting up but maybe to Europe such employment would be of interest. I am sure of one thing, walking around the place, in the interiors inhabited now only by the pigeons that have sprinkled guano floors and valuable stairs, in the exteriors invaded by weeds and city fauna but with glimpses that give a clear idea of ancient splendors, I his heart squeezed and I could not avoid a clear sense of dismay at seeing so much decay, under the distracted eyes of our Directors, a place of absolute value is undone which would be the pride of any other country, perhaps only in the developing world.
UPDATE: Today 18 June 2019 from the press I read numerical data concerning the structure and register that the monumental complex would measure 170,000 square meters, the external spaces are 12 hectares and the Governor of Lazio has announced that soon a part of the spaces will be occupied by the Monteverde Carabinieri Barracks. Our Carabinieri will therefore take advantage of part of that space that I sincerely would have preferred was at the complete disposal of the Citizens and used for cultural, tourism, museum or anything else by assigning our friends in uniform a modern renovated building among the many that in Rome have been left to themselves, I am reminded of part of the Royal Palace of Caserta once used by the Italian military and now returned to the community, good news that part of the park will be used for public events after being suitably reclaimed (we will see what remediation will be treated). Congratulations to the inhabitants of Monteverde who may perhaps enjoy part of the complex.
