IIT is a foundation that aims to promote excellence in basic and applied research and to encourage the development of the national economic system. The staff of the Institute is approximately 1470 people, 85% of whom are employed in the scientific area, located in twelve research centers on the national territory and two laboratories abroad (MIT and Harvard). In recent years, the main areas of IIT patents have been the New Materials, Health and Robotics sectors, with almost 7000 publications, over 130 European projects, 350 active patent applications, 13 startups set up and as many being created.
