Susan Carney Review of Pittsburgh Botanic Garden

This was a first (and last) visit for me. It was a gorgeous day to be outdoors, and wanting to go somewhere new, we were looking forward to the gardens. It is a nice trail, partly paved, but mostly wooded. When I asked, I was told the gardens were established 5-6 years ago. The pond was the prettiest area, surrounded by beautiful trees and was peaceful.
The new welcome center had just recently opened, and includes a gift shop with unique items, and a cafe with indoor seating surrounded by glass windows overlooking pine trees, and an outdoor deck area. Unfortunately for us, the cafe closed 2 hours before the gardens, so when we returned for a late lunch at 3:15, we were disappointed to find the cafe already closed. The event area looked very nice from afar.
My lower rating "stems" (pun not intended) from 2 things. Basically, you're walking through the woods with already established trees and plants marked with their names, and the admission fees are high for a walk in the woods. Sure it's a work in progress, but I was left wondering what we had paid for! The new welcome center, maybe?! Anyway, it still was a nice day for an expensive trail walk, but that was thanks to Mother Nature!
