After 35 years of looking at Margraten again, the feeling was just as intense as then, all those young lives that were given for our freedom.
It is all nice and sleek, well maintained, visitors can pass the graves in peace and read the names on the tombstones. A beautiful respectful place that should definitely be visited.
Now I had discussed a campsite for my holiday and it turned out to be just behind the field of honor.
Every evening at 5:00 PM I heard trumpet playing coming from the cemetery, I thought the flag is being lowered with military honor and I want to experience that.
On the last day of my stay I walked to the back of the cemetery, there I had an unobstructed view of the flag, now waiting for it to happen, what I saw then I really couldn't, two employees took the flag at 4:40 PM to come down and hurry detour, at 5:00 pm sounded from a loudspeaker trumpet play and that was it.
I think the latter is a pity, that it does not seem possible to lower the flag with respect and with trumpet playing at the close of the day.
