The church was originally made of wood. The first stone walls were built between 1410 and 1420, and in approximately 1450, the church expanded 4 meters to the east and 6 meters to the south.

The church has been destroyed by fire on numerous occasions; in 1508 by the Danish forces and in 1571, 1590 and 1708 by the Russian forces. On May 29, 2006, the exterior roof collapsed in a fire, but with the interior roof intact and the interiors of the cathedral intact. It was reopened in July 2008.
