The temple was built in 1573-1578 as a church of the Order of St. John. It was designed by the Maltese architect Girolamo Cassar. The cathedral has eight chapels, each of which is dedicated to one of the "languages" of the Order of St. John.

Inside the co-cathedral, near the main entrance, there is the tombstone of Grand Master Joannite Marc Antonio Zondadari.

Inconspicuous from the outside. The interior is full of ornaments, sculptures, marble and decorations. Literally every free fragment of the walls was richly decorated. You can walk with your head up all the time.
