This museum is located in the Villahermosa Palace, which was the residence of an aristocratic family and the seat of a bank, and in 1992 it was remodeled by the prestigious architect Rafael Moneo.
This became the seat of Thyssen-Bornemisza in that year and there the collection belonging to the Baron, the most important private collection in Europe, was installed.
The Thyssen-Bornemisza foundation created in 1988 and belongs to the public sector, is responsible for the management of the museum and the conservation, exhibition and dissemination of the collection that the State acquired in 1993.
Since the opening to the public of the museum in 1992, the number and variety of temporary exhibitions that have been carried out in it have increased.
On February 19, the one dedicated to Baltasar Klossowski de Rola, known as Balthus, one of the great masters of the 20th century and also one of the most unique painters of his time, is inaugurated.
