Marsha Crane-Finch Review of Plaza Resort Bonaire
This is our second stay here in the last three yea...
This is our second stay here in the last three years. Two years ago we spent two weeks here and really enjoyed ourselves and all the resort offered.
We are here now in the middle of a three week stay and unfortunately the same cannot be said. I will say improvements have been made to the grounds. The service at Coconut Crash is outstanding and the food at the new Scubar is very good.....when you can get it. Tucan Diving is much improved and everyone has enjoyed the staff there.
Since our stay is so long and we wanted to stay all inclusive with diving I had to make our reservation through the hotel not online. Not a problem until two days ago we see unexpected charges come thru. What I was invoiced and told to pay 50/50 did not include the requested diving (shown on invoice) nor our premium drink upgrade clearly requested via email. Resulted in about $1,000 more than initially invoiced.
The food. The good thing, I won't be gaining weight. Gone is the cute area filled with yummy breads my kids loved so much. It's replaced with a self serve beverage station and it's almost impossible to get a fresh coffee or cappuccino, some of the staff in the restaurant will even flat out refuse to make it for you.
Gone are the cute parfait cups with yogurt, various salads and desserts. Now they are spread out in the center sad, sorry and no longer yummy.
Breakfast is pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage, oatmeal, fruit and salads every day. Several days the fruit has been canned pineapple rings. Gone is the wonderful, fresh papaya. My son and I went in for a late breakfast yesterday, no ice around the yogurt so it was warm and the only service we had was 5 minutes before close to collect our plates.
Live cooking. One night we had a good snapper. The gentleman that works at lunch is very nice. We went in yesterday an hour after lunch started and the had already sold out of whatever they had for lunch. Another night at dinner we went in an hour before closing and they told us live cooking stops at 9 even though dinner runs until 10.
BBQ night, the food was grilled ahead and cold. We've just found the restaurant food to be all around poor. Enough to make us not come back. Far removed from just two years ago.
Scubar serves fantastic food in contrast. Most days they have grilled fish and will serve it on a nice salad for us. The kids enjoy the fresh wraps. The issue we have had is trying to eat dinner here. Some nights they stop serving dinner at 5. Last night they were busy but we were told since it was 6 she would only make certain things (open until 7 if busy). So we settled on two bowls of soup, two wraps to go for the kids and a salad. The soup came and it was great. Then we got 1 wrap and told "oh well I'm cleaning" even when we explained we had two kids. No salad. We wouldn't be trying to eat dinner here if the restaurant was tolerable. So we are out of dinner options.
I miss being able to get food at Coconut Crash too. They used to have a great goat cheese salad.
We have mentioned our dislike of the food to the restaurant manager and several others.
Our room. We do like our ocean front suite, they were being renovated when we were here last. As our stay has continued housekeeping has declined. We do get fresh towels every day and the beds are made but I'm noticing the sand is not being cleaned from the floor and it tracks into the bed, then you notice the sheets are not being changed because you're sleeping in sand.
Come to Bonaire, it's amazing but I would not stay here.
