If you can, take the train ride. One of the highlights of my trip to Colorado. If you book the open air car understand you will have some coal ash that comes in, just don't wear a white shirt unless you don't mine flecks of black ash. :) Seriously though, it's a great reminder of how train travel was during they heyday of train travels. The scenery is phenomenal, many areas only see man when the trains pass through. The train guides provide a great deal of information and are helpful during the stop in Silverton.
