Kevin C. Burns Review of The Colcord Hotel

My wife and I stayed at the Colcord Hotel for our first anniversary in May 2013. We booked our room and paid in advance directly from the hotel website, gaining a $40 discount per night. The hotel itself is beautiful with elegant stylings from the early 20th century updated with modern conveniences in recent renovations. We purchased the smallest king suite and yet were amazed at the amount of space in our room. We had enough room to fit another king bed in the living space! Similarly, our friends' room had a plenty of space to spare, though laid out differently. The hotel staff was very pleasant and helpful throughout our stay. The only thing the hotel lacks is solid amenities outside the room, however, in the middle of the downtown business district and short walk from Bricktown, it's mostly a non-issue.
Though an extreme circumstance, we were in the hotel during the tornados of May 31, 2013 that passed through south OKC. The staff alerted us through the intercom system in the rooms that a tornado warning was issued and it was time to take shelter. They provided the alert about 10-15 minutes before it would reach the hotel. We took the stairs and were calmly and kindly directed to the basement tunnels, reassured that everything would be okay. The staff passed out water bottles and retrieved banquet chairs for the guests. After the threat had passed, they let us out to return to our rooms. It was all handled professionally and safely.
Other Pros:
Technology - the hotel offers free Wi-Fi with decent speeds throughout the hotel and rooms. Additionally, the HDTV actually has HD channels instead of standard definition channels stretched to fill the screen (common at hotels). The TV listing includes about 110 channels with the HBO suite of movies.
Newspapers - Free local (Oklahoman) and national (USA Today and Wall Street Journal).
Shuttle - one of the bellhops will drive you to any location downtown (within a mile or two). We had them take us to our dinner at The Melting Pot in Bricktown. They use a GMC Envoy so it's a nice ride.
Parking - parking is actually affordable at $7 per day in the garage across the street. It's $20 per day for the valet to park your car.
Overall, we had a great stay and would go back!
