Our Boy Scout Troop enjoyed our annual Winter Camp at Hawk Mountain Scout Reservation. Although there was no staff on hand and program areas were closed an exploration of the camp revealed a delightful lake, a COPE course challenge area (including zip lines), a large dining hall and a well stocked Trading Post.
The cabin we stayed in was typical for a BSA camp, cinder block construction with bunk beds lining a central dining area. The small wood stove in the corner was a challenge for the fire building skills of the younger Scouts but was more than adequately heating the single floor, one room structure an hour or so after ignition.
The only drawback was the unfortunate placement of the smoke detector near the kitchen stove, causing the need for open windows during the morning while the boys fried three pounds of bacon for breakfast. The placement of the refrigerator next to the oven was also an inefficient, if quieter, choice than the smoke detectors.
Carrying water from the pool area to the cabin was a great team building exercise for a few of the Troop members, especially after a winter water battle brought home the Boy Scout motto, "Be prepared". Bring dry clothes to change into.
