I came here in my '99 miata looking to get a cylinder 4 misfire diagnosed. First the good, setting up an appointment was easy. And when I dropped off my car I wandered over to the sales department and an extremely friendly gentleman was happy to talk to me about another miata they had on the lot even though he knew I wasn't looking to buy.
Now for the bad. I came to the dealer because the shop I normally go to was stumped, they had already checked the obvious issues such as plugs, wires, and coils. I tried to explain this to the gentleman at the service desk but he didn't seem to grok it. When I asked to talk to the Tech, I was told I could only talk to him. So fine I sat down and waited.
When the service desk guy came back out he sat down and with a straight face told me they were recommending $2k in service. The he started going through the list of work; coolant flush, timing belt, coils, intake cleaning and air filter. So I asked him what on the list is actually related to the misfire I came in here for. So he backs it up to $1.5k. So I said ok why do I need the timing belt change did it look damaged? "oh no it's just based on the milage on the car" nevermind he didn't bother to ask if I knew when the timing belt was last done. Which I do, I have receipts to show it was done less that 20,000 miles ago.
So when I finally whittled it down to what they want to do that was actually related to the misfire they wanted to change the coils (I know they were fine my other shop already went down that route) and do some sort of intake cleaning that just involved dumping chemical into the engine.
I begrudgingly paid the $130 for my diagnostic and left. Their greedy lying service dept won't see another dime from me.
