My 88 year old mother spent 10 days in LTC (after rehab) before becoming severely dehydrated with a UTI. They provided thickened nectar only, due to swallowing difficulties and aspiration risk. It is impossible to keep someone hydrated on thickened nectar. The day prior to being admitted to the hospital, the nurse on staff told me mom "showed no signs of dehydration".
While I can't blame ALL the failure of care my mom has experienced on this one facility, (because they all appear to promise care they are too short staffed and/or untrained to provide), we now face end of life decisions and Hospice. If you are searching for an Assisted Living or LTC for your loved one, call Hospice and ask for recommendations of facilities that put their residents first, in lieu of their "stakeholders". I wish I would have figured that out sooner.
