We opted to join the guided tour which lasted for 45 min. It was very informative and our guide was knowledgeable and approachable. We we're pressed for time so didn't spend as much time as we would've liked on the herring refinement part of the museum. I would definitely recommend bringing your out of town friends to this place. It is right by Steveston Pier which has great photo ops and many quaint stores to shop at.
