Rede Globo is a Brazilian open commercial television network headquartered in the city of Rio de Janeiro. It is assisted by more than 200 million people daily, be they in Brazil or abroad, through TV Globo International. [9] [10] The station is the second largest commercial television network in the world, behind only the American American Broadcasting Company (ABC) [11] [12] and one of the largest producers of soap operas. The station reaches 98.56% of the Brazilian territory, covering 5,490 municipalities and about 99.55% of the total Brazilian population. The company is part of Grupo Globo, one of the largest media conglomerates on the planet. [13] [14] [15]

Although on January 5, 1951, during the government of Eurico Gaspar Dutra, Radio Globo first requested a television concession, it was only in July 1957 that then President Juscelino Kubitschek approved the concession; at the end of December of the same year, the National Telecommunications Council published a decree that granted channel 4 of Rio de Janeiro to TV Globo Ltda. [16] The station began operating on April 26, 1965 and was founded by journalist Roberto Marinho.

As the nation's largest television network and one of the largest in the world, the station has an unparalleled ability to influence culture, politics and public opinion. Since its founding, the company has a long history of controversy in its relations with Brazilian society, ranging from its support to the military regime to influence in presidential elections of the democratic period, as in 1989.
