We sent our daughter to camp manitowa last year - she has a number of special needs including verbal problems and depression. She enjoyed it, but had a lot of trouble adjusting, told me she spent a lot of time alone (skipping events and no one noticed) and came home with impetigo. We didn t complain. This year we were going to send her again to help her social skills and so I communicated with the owner about her special needs in advance. The night before she was due to leave for camp the counselor called to tell my 12 year old she would be bunking with two girls who told the counselor they don t like my daughter (these same girls bullied my daughter in school). The only option they offered as a solution was for my daughter to room with kids who are not her age. So, knowing my daughter s social issues and problems with self advocacy, I kept her home. Camp manitowa is now keeping my money- a lot of money- despite the fact that the other girls had the problem, they were going to isolate my kid, they offered no advice on how they would help protect my daughter, and they weren t reachable to discuss the issue the night before camp. I was a prosecutor for 10 years specializing in crimes against children. I give presentations all over the country to youth serving organizations on how to prevent childhood sexual abuse and bullying- this place thinks that free range child care is good enough. It s not.
