We stayed here for 8 nights July-Aug this year, This is quite an impressive looking building, with its long drive past the gatehouse and up through landscaped grounds, to the majestic old Manor House, it defiantly looks the part, and from the pictures that you can see here and elsewhere online you get the feeling you are going to be in for something above the usual hotel stay .. However first of all a little reality check If you pay for the cheapest room , or a basic package, you can t really be expected to stay in the grand luxurious Manor rooms , on a large jewel encrusted four poster bed , the figures just don t add up. What you will get if you go for the cheapest room option will be one of the rooms in the Newer outer wing, which are more reminiscent of a Travel Premier Inn Lodge type of thing, all adequate and the essentials covered, but no Lord of the Manor, upstairs Downstairs type of feeling, but really that is to be expected, if you want the better rooms, you of course have to pay the higher price.
The entrance looks feels the part, the spacious lobby with its large welcoming fireplace and large comfy chairs, takes you back to a period where grand lavishness and a cringing and fawning service was the norm, where you were treated to the real luxuries in life, by people that were there to cater for all your whims and needs at the drop of a hat
But this is where it ends, it has a feel about the place that this was once a Hotel with more stars that is now living on its former reputation and on its way down, or it s trying to be a higher class establishment on a budget, and falling well short. My main issues were with the staffing, there seemed to be a lack of training or a least hiring of staff that would be efficient for the job they were intended for, they lacked that Finesse and to be honest a few of them just appeared to be in the wrong career totally, looking bored or appeared to be Not Really Bothered if you were to enquire for anything. And the place was run with a more That ll do attitude, rather than a How can we improve this type of attitude.
And breakfast was the biggest issue , comical at times bordering on total incompetence at others , it just feels like no-body is looking anymore , it s like they are going through the same routine & motions (badly) with closed eyes on automatic, and the Guest are just getting in the way a bit. It just feels that it needs someone to go in there with fresh eyes watch where it is going wrong and how things can be improved by staff re-trained, and I feel they could be onto something so much improved
*** If you haven t paid for breakfast with the room I would like to say that it is not worth the money they charge for the individual price ***
Don t get me wrong the stay was reasonably enjoyable, and many of the staff were friendly and helpful, it s just that their service was over shadowed by the poor service from others.
I should point out that we never had a meal in the place after the experience we had at our first breakfast we decided to go elsewhere , so I can t comment on the food , well only to say that it seemed pricey , and there was little chance that service would be acceptable for those prices if the attempts of the morning service was anything to go by
TBH I could provide a list where things are lacking, however I feel this has gone on way too long (should have kept this to the usual two line review, uploaded a few pictures, grabbed my points and moved on) , and most of you would have stopped reading by now. Oh and I am not one of those people that just us Google to slate off a place for no reason , I just feel that this place to could be so much improved , by taking a few things back to basics
