Started our search for a retirement spot with an O...

Started our search for a retirement spot with an OSHER course surveying retirement options and communities in the Durham-Chapel Hill area of North Carolina. Visited half a dozen sites. At the prodding of our kids, added 2 more in NC, 3 in Austin, and 3 in Northern Va. Made the winnowing process as rational and factual as possible, but the final choice was still a decision. Three finalists. Selected this one. Home Run!!
100 years of tweaking has left all the services with the resident's interest on top. They have arranged, either internally or with long time partners, a smorgasboard of support services for living independently, ranging from routine housekeeping to in-home health care and even Hospice. We have not moved into an old age home; we've found an apartment for ageing in place with vetted care and services at our fingertips. That scores on our first selection criteria, staying together.
Our second criteria was financial reliability. At a public briefing, the director said We want you to know we are handling YOUR MONEY responsibly. That about covers it.
As a bonus, in addition to the absolutely wonderful staff other reviewers have commented on and a refreshing Customer First mantra in its operations, the place is loaded with alert and engaged residents - a bubbling pool of wonderful new friends. Nice place to live.
We nailed the peaceful, stress free retirement folks dream about. Life has turned out better than we ever expected. Check out Asbury before you commit.
