Jack Flynn Review of Orchard City Kitchen
Inventive Drinks with some Great Food
Inventive Drinks with some Great Food
Orchard City Kitchen, is an experience when it comes to dinning. It isn't so much about the flavor parings as it is about joining with a group of friends to share $12-$20 tapas and sip stiff drinks. At the end of the night, you'll have gone through layers of the menu feeling satisfied with some highlights, but a lot of "I was expecting more" feelings.
The drinks are strong, yet come in interesting vessels, there is a love of unique flavors, that will make most people either fall in love with the boldness or find their meal sidetracked by the oddity of the drink.
The individual plates range from the unique shaved raw brussels sprouts with a vinaigrette just the right crunch of croutons, to a tender octopus overpowered by liquid smoke. There's high notes where flavors are dealt with a subtle hand, letting the customer wonder if the chef really is this brilliant, or if they just stumbled upon what makes people love food. Then, there's the low notes where your mouth is blown out by the fishiest of shrimp ever put on a plate.
There's moments of brilliance where their signature Biscuits Bacon honey Butter makes you stop and forget that you're not supposed to eat gluten anymore. You find yourself wishing there was more bacon, more butter, more biscuits, and more time to relish the perfect pairing.
Then there's moments where you look at the tiny cold duck breast with bland lentils making you wonder if the chef decided to take a smoke break.
Overall, this is a fun place to go and spend $100.00 on a couple of drinks and a few plates. It isn't somewhere you'll rave to everyone you've ever met about the succulent morsels you've put in your mouth, but you won't be overly disappointed either. If you have two drinks you'll probably find the entire night enchanting and fantastic, you'll also need an uber home.
This is a solid 3 stars, maybe a 4th if they toned down the overpowering love of smoke flavor.
