My golden retriever was brought in after a "night/...

My golden retriever was brought in after a "night/weekend only" emergency pet clinic determined that he needed ongoing treatment.
I took him to WVG for continued care. The normal processes were not in place due to covid-19 pandemic. All clients from both of their facilities were consolidated to one location in Union. It was certainly crowded. But, when you were able to get a person on the telephone, they gave you their full attention and made sure you spoke to a veterinarian. They took my 14 year old Simba in and examined him while we waited in the parking lot. Very scary for us to say the least. He was to be treated as in hospital for about 3 days. After 1 night I was called and told that he was not doing well. He was lethargic, not eating or getting up anymore. That was no surprise to us because I had told them, carefully that since his brother (labradoodle-Mack) died some months ago, he does not eat much and then only hand feeding, and gets extremely depressed when we are away from him. Long story short, it was suggested that we might need to put him down. But from the way he was when we walked him in, I wasn't totally convinced that this was due to the vomiting/ illness only. After all, he still thinks that he is a puppy! I was not able to see him because of pandemic so, we picked him up and treated him at home with the prescribed medication/ IV fluids and love. As a frontline RN I saw that the lethargy was extreme and took him off of Neurontin for pain. A different dog emerged over the next few days. He was becoming more like himself. Ultimately he had kidney infection and not acute kidney failure. They prescribed additional antibiotics that worked. He's since been camping/swimming at the lake and just happy to be. And although he is old, he still enjoys life! The WVG is extremely professional, knowledgeable and caring. They communicated with us regularly and I have nothing bad to say about the Drs. and staff. I would encourage them to really listen to what pet parents say/know about their (14 year) relationship with their pets. The pandemic made it very difficult but he was ultimately saved because we know him intimately and investigated more fully. No different then parents do with their children. We will help him enjoy whatever time he has left, until life is no longer fun for him!! The quoted price for 3 days was almost the price charged for only one day! Thankfully I have pet insurance. I would definitely use WVG again if needed.
