The rickety old store-front building that houses the MIT Museum is hiding in plain sight, tucked away on Mass Ave between the main campus and Central Square. Really, you have to look for it. Once you make it through a disorganized lobby/giftshop, inside is a stunning, well-curated collection of achievements in robotics, neurology, photography, engineering and other fields that can exist nowhere else. After all, this is THE MIT. Most of the exhibits are on the second floor and a couple of hours is all you need to take in the collection and catch an occasional presentation. It is fairly childproof and child-accessible. The discounts for admission are numerous so check and admission is free the last Sunday of every month September to June.
