Topher Speth Review of Viceroy Hotel Palm Springs

If you've ever been home shopping, you've seen some bad flips. The kind where they cut corners so that they can spend as much possible on the "curb appeal", all the while ignoring all of the little (or big) things that need attention.
That's what the Avalon is - a bad flip. The paint colors are pleasing, but the application is sloppy as soon as you take more than a glance. The expensive-looking light fixtures are installed off center. The in-room tablet is a nice tech touch, but they skimped on the real expense of wiring the room for 21st century electrical needs.
The bathroom had no silver lining - The tiny shower has a cheap curtain and a peeling finish. At the price point, I was expecting a tub, but there was none to be found. There wasn't even a place to put our hand towel, so it stayed draped over the sink.
The staff is spotty at best. When we entered our room the first time, there was a wet towel on the floor from the previous guest. Our robes never got refolded. Pools are boasted, but after asking three times, we never did get our pool towels. Thankfully, it was hot enough that we could air dry. The valets (a nearly mandatory service that redirected our question when we asked about self-parking) were the only people we interacted with that seemed happy to be working there.
The ability to schedule when housekeeping comes through the app was nice. Make sure you use it so you don't come back to the room at 4PM to find everything still how you left it.
The location is very convenient, although I'm not sure PS is big enough that there too many inconvenient hotels.
