Went on Dec. 30, 2019. Thankfully, there were lots of snow when we visited. I bought a shoe grip from the store across North Face in Hakuba the day before (I think it was around 1500yen), and I don't regret it! It was super useful for the icy/slippery areas. I think I can use it for future travels. But you can also rent it out at the entrance. The place was beautiful. There were a lot of people though. Better to arrive in the morning since more people arrive around lunchtime.
