Richard Latker Review of CHP/UPMC

While we recognize that there are some outstanding professionals at UPMC Children's, our seven years' of experience with the hospital prompts us to warn others to avoid it if at all possible, and to take the glowing reviews with a large grain of salt. Our confidence in the place has steadily evaporated. On balance, bringing our child here has done him more harm than good. Despite a complex medical disorder requiring multi-specialty expertise, he's never been assigned a case manager. Virtually every procedure he has undergone has been afflicted by some sort of sloppiness and misinformation -- often minor, and usually exacting costs measured in time and frustration, but more than once affecting his access to proper care. Layers of opacity and needless complexity, no doubt designed to deter litigation and offload risk to parents, envelop this hospital like a thick fog. The idea that UPMC is a "non-profit" charity is absolutely laughable. It is a corporation like any other, aggressively pursuing its own interests, and those interests are not always identical to those of the patients it serves. You may have no other choice but to bring your child here, but be very, very cautious.
