Dee Dee Review of Chef Rob

I wasn't expecting to give this place a good review because I'm more of a "hole in the wall" Caribbean food type of chick. You know the place that kinda looks shady, servers speak in patois, and the patties are slamming?! Well, that's the type of place I like. So to say I wasn't expecting much from the Caribbean equivalent to Paschal's Restaurant, is an understatement. However, I must say I was pleasantly surprised.
First, we had a large party of 42 and the service was on point. There was no hassle when it came time for splitting the checks, they honored my Foursquare discount, and the servers were attentive and cordial.
The food, although not very authentic tasting, was pretty good. Well at least my stuffed fish dinner was. My husband's jerk chicken and curry goat dinner wasn't. He liked it; while I thought it was unseasoned, lacked spice, and was on the bland side. However, the stuffed fish was truly delicious, and I'm saddened it was a special item and not on the regular menu.
I was kinda miffed I had to pay an additional $1 for rice & peas to substitute for the jasmine rice that came with my dinner. In all my years I've never seen where rice & peas isn't the only &/or main rice served at a Caribbean restaurant. The accompanying plantains were standard but really good, and my rice & peas could have had more flavor. However, it was nothing too bad that a healthy dose of scotch bonnet pepper sauce couldn't fix.
All in all I can say Chef Rob's gets an A-Ok. Chef Rob's Caribbean Cafe is overpriced in relation to your typical Caribbean restaurant, and I've had better tasting Jamaican food. But, for those of you who aren't acquainted with Caribbean food, or prefer their Caribbean food less spicy and flavorful, you should give this place a try.
