Loved visiting here. It's about a 2-hr drive from the DC area and well worth it. Apparently, there are birds that migrate through all season long. My girlfriend and I (both in our mid-20s) found ourselves surrounded by retired folks carrying high-end binoculars and telescopes around. Luckily for us, the visitor center was kind enough to lend binoculars and the "regulars" would sometimes let us look through their scopes.

The refuge itself is a nice drive. You can stop wherever you want, get out, look around, snap photos, and then continue along. You can also bike. I would recommend going between winter/spring or fall/winter seasons to get a decent amount of warmth without the bugs.
