We recently found an unfurnished place in Marigny and decided to drop in at nearby Doerr's, where we were extremely fortunate to be connected with Sylvia Brooks. She immediately made us feel welcome and gave us an orientation tour of the store, since we said we were there just to see what all they had rather than having anything specific in mind. She let us know that the selections were not limited to what was on the floor; instead, they could custom design pretty much anything we wanted. Then she left us alone to wander around the store but checked in with us from time to time. By the end of those two hours, Sylvia had completely gained our trust and had established a very high comfort level with us. Now, after a couple of weeks of shopping and meeting with Sylvia, she's become a friend who is fun to shop with. She came to our place and took pictures and measurements to help us figure out what would work in our space. She showed us countless fabrics and designs and was honest in her appraisal of the suitability of the ones that we were interested in. The fact that she has professional design training was evident from the start, and has been of great value to us. We are not yet finished furnishing our place but we will continue to rely on Sylvia to help us complete the project. Finally, we were very impressed with the quality of the merchandise that Doerr's sells, as well as with the appearance and general feel of the store. You only need to walk into any other furniture or department store and you will immediately see the difference in quality, with Doerr's being superior. The prices are reasonable, too. Finally, I agree with other comments in that I like supporting a local business that has been a New Orleans institution for decades.
