The Illinois Army National Guard serves both a state and federal mission. Most Soldiers serve 1 weekend a month and 2 weeks on Active Duty each year. They are known as Citizen-Soldiers.

By serving in the Illinois Army National Guard for 1 year and completing U.S. Army Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training, an Illinois Guardsman receives the Illinois National Guard Grant, which pays 100% Tuition to any 2 year state college or 4 year state university. This is managed by ISAC or Illinois Student Assistance Commission. It is guaranteed by state law, regardless of budget constraints.
