Sofitel Denarau has positioned itself as a five star resort however I feel it's fallen short of the mark significantly in a number of key areas.
Rooms were good and the service was certainly friendly however it was highly ineffecient and at times frustrating when staff members were unable to appreciate the various Accor products they they were participating in.
The room I stayed in was in the upgraded "luxury beach club access" room. The room was not very different to the standard rooms however the area was kid free.
The rooms were spacious, the bathrooms were not and poorly designed.
The beach club was worth a visit when the weather was good.
Sadly for our trip the weather was poor for 4 out of five days. There was .a cyclone and this clearly showed that the Sofitel team did not appear to have a unified approach to disaster management.
The hotel was flooded with children and frustrated adults, the kitchens beyond capacity with food taking more than an hour to be served from the limited 'rainy weather' menu.
During this period it was extremely difficult to get any time with staff, many avoiding customers attempts to talk. This was extremely frustrating.
Internet offered at the hotel was not workable and very slow. I was unable to do my work, despite having purchased the "fast" internet. The free guest internet as the hotel next door was 5x faster!
Food offerings at the hotel were good with the exception of the buffet. Here the environment reminded me of a cheap cruise ship. Disorganized, little food hygiene and the very poor, unappealing selection.
Members of my travelling group were taken down with vomiting an diarrhea, the common denominator was the buffet.
Business services at the hotel were average and very slow to fix problems but quick to add charges for doing it.
Pools were well kept and the beach club had a bar with simple food and drinks. The staff of the beach club were variable. Some super friendly, many who gave an affect of "rather not be here".
Overall I was not impressed with the Sofitel. It absolutely did not match the international reputation of the chain.
