While my daughter was in recovery on the 8th floor...

While my daughter was in recovery on the 8th floor Cardiac, we had been requesting an echo since 11/3 afternoon when she was showing signs of respiratory deterioration through 11/4 post appendectomy. The Fellow MD Duran continually denied our request to check her pulmonary hypertension pressures by Echo as he was convinced it was Atelectasis (partial collapsed lung)...while never actually seeing my daughter and seeing how bad her breathing had become along with elevated heart rate, high respirations and destating into the 80s o2! It wasn t until I was at my wits end Monday morning at 6am when I told the Resident doctor that I had had it with the doctors being complacent and shooting down our concerns for hypertension. We know our child and her history of hypertension and they should have done an echo right away to rule it out!!! Dr Malik came and discussed with me why I was upset and I told her that they were complacent about our child who has had a history of pulmonary hypertension and due to her deteriorating respiratory condition, I demanded an echo ASAP! She said that they were going to do it right away but that she was of the same opinion as Duran that it was just Atelectasis and that the xrays were improving...then why was she continuing to deteriorate!...thus why we continued to beg for an echo!

They finally did the echo at 10:30am 11/5 and was told I should hear from the doctors in 30 minutes or so. They did not come in to give report until almost 2pm at which point the main doctor Malik notifies us that she did in fact have Pulmonary Hypertension and it was severe at the high 50% range!!!

This was a blatant misdiagnosis and is unacceptable because our child could have died from an imminent hypertension crisis if I had not lost it on them. The nurses all were wonderful and agreed that an echo should have already taken place! We never had any issues during her OHS in 10/2016 but this experience for her appendectomy was a nightmare and these doctors need a quality ego check to their God Complex and it needs to be common practice to perform an echo for complex Shone s kiddos with a history of PH after any procedure especially when symptomatic!!! Very disappointed in Dallas Children s!!!
