Hatfield is definitely a bit of a jewel in the crown. I've been a frequent visitor to the entire for 45 years. Generally very peaceful and tranquil with some lovely walks especially the west garden which provides the opportunity for lovely stroll, particular at this time of year with bluebells, rhododendron and a variety of fabulous trees some of which are very old. The house itself is a Jacobean masterpiece packed full of Tudor and other artifacts. The food olfferings have changed a number of times in recent years and are currently manifest in Hugh Fernley Whittinstall's River Cottage themed restaurant and deli. The menu is interesting but very expensive and is a little exclusive, pricing out a less well off potential clientele. Also painfully slow queuing to order and pay. Other than that a great day out (there is a children's play area) and once bought and stamped, your tickets will admit you to the park and gardens all season which marks it out as good value.
