Rachel Yap Review of Singapore Red Cross

The Red Cross HQ has a well-stocked thrift shop located in the quieter but still convenient side of town. Pleased to find old but nifty condition Ladybug Classics, even snacks/baby food and a good thrift discount bin. I love their well maintained book collection, and if you are looking for straw hats for an upcoming beach holiday, do try here. It's really all for a good cause. Sadly, our experience was marred by one of the volunteers who came up to us accusing us of theft when we were trying on a jacket while standing near the mirror. When she approached, she wasn't wearing the volunteer tag like the others so we thought she was a customer 'queuing' for the same jacket, as is common in thrift shops. She asked if the jacket was from here, so we naturally said "yes." Then she asked if it was going into the basket we held on to with the rest of the items we chose, and us, confused, answered "yes of course, we are getting it!" For some reason, that answer made her think we were going to steal it when we were just very confused by her approach. There was another volunteer watching our moves the whole time we were there - she could have just spoken up to say we were trying a jacket from the discount bin (besides...why would we attempt theft when she was standing no more than 30cm away with eyes trained on us the whole time?) To add...there were indeed 2 - 3 other persons standing around trying winter jackets. Nevertheless, being discriminated is not a good feeling at all and I would imagine it would have been traumatising for someone else. It could have been handled more nicely after the confusion was cleared up. On the flip side, the two elderly couple at the cashier counter was the nicest, friendliest people we met there, and changed the whole experience. I say, do give the thrift shop a try and try your darnest not to look like a thief.
