Emmi Thornton Crowley Review of Fondazione Bioparco di Roma

I visited Bioparco Zoo last month and was appalled by how distressed one of the Lions was. It was pacing backwards and forwards repeatedly which is a clear sign of boredom and distress. People were knocking on the glass and shouting, taking photos making the lion even more distressed. An animal of that size should not be kept in an enclosure of that size, it was far too small and inadequate as the lion was clearly not well.
I was also extremely distressed to see a 'lone Elephant' that was on its own in what seemed like a concrete cell. Thd Elephant appeared extremely bored and depressed with lack of stiulation from other Elephants and its environment. On the information board outside it even stated that Elephants are highly intelligent animals that live in large groups. This clearly was not the case at Bioparco Zoo. This Elephant had no companionship at all and was surrounded by concrete and no trees or grass. . The Elephant was very subdued and did not move the entire time I was there. The Elephants needs were not being catered for at all, a ver sad sight to see!!
I was ashamed to have paid and contributed to witness such large animals in distress.
Something needs to be done about these large animals to ensure their future welfare and to meet their needs.
Outside the Park are the large gardens, it's such a waste of green ourdoor space which coud be utilised for the much larger animals.
