I brought a car in for exactly one purpose - to get an additional key cut and programmed. When they were done, the new key didn't work.

True, when I went back inside and pointed this out, they apologized and fixed it promptly - but it doesn't leave a good feeling when they don't test the one thing I came in for, before declaring it done. What if it was a more serious repair, and one where I couldn't readily verify they had fixed it properly ? The showroom is bright and shiny, the people were all very polite and professional - but I'd rather have more confidence in the people back in the shop.
