Interesting experience. We went on the "steam engine" weekend of Labor Day. Not a good experience overall.

First, the steam engine had "technical difficulties" going up to the Grand Canyon and we had to stop. Meaning the train was delayed. The length of time getting to the Grand Canyon was extended.

Second, I paid for the dome cabin and it was very expensive. I expected a higher level of treatment and service. Not so. You just paid for the view. I also had the great experience of a young child kicking my seat. The "provided" snacks were a joke.

Third, on my return trip, I chose first class and again disappointment. The diesel engine provided the train a safe return home instead of the steam engine. It seems the steam engine could not be "fixed" and this was the only option (the steam engine was why we paid a higher fare per the agent). We were lucky to get home or not be rescheduled on the other train. In addition, the provided "snacks" were again a disappointment. The first class cabin was very much empty on this return trip. Great point, no child kicking my seat and less expensive ride back. Scenery was nice and no traffic.

Recommend that the railway update their website description and be honest with their provided services.

For the Western show, it consisted of a 5 minute skit before boarding and the "cowboys walking up and down the train aisle". A holdup for tips happens at the end of the train ride. You were also provided an option to purchase a picture of yourself while on the train. A food type train cabin was available for an extra charge. The "host" of the cabin did rattle off several times during our trip the drink specials and bar times for purchasing alcohol. The entertainment could have been more impressive; as well as, the provided information about the outside scenery in lieu of the alcohol for purchase.

Actually debated considering providing this trip a 2 star rating. Only reasoning for the 3 star was the natural scenery and the ease of getting to the Grand Canyon, no hassle of fighting traffic or finding parking.
