United Way has a negative stigma from being part of a larger national organization and having to cut funding from local orgs. I think it s hard for the public to see how integrated they are in our community and the intense work they do to make sure they re supporting as many local nonprofits as possible as they launch into innovative plans for the future. Most of the people there are kind and genuinely care about the folks they re serving. Despite being rooted in a hundred years of classist, racist, generally elitist philanthropy, they re actually trying to focus on equity and diversity (not just as buzzwords like most organizations) and uplift marginalized communities. Their 211 hotline is essential in providing accessible resources and their volunteer opportunities are so valuable for the privileged public. While there s much to be done in the white liberal nonprofit sector, GTCUW is definitely a thought-leader in those strides.
