Kristin P Review of Mark Morris Dance Group

This review is for the company performance I saw last night at Columbus Circle. As a lifelong dancer, lover of the arts, and professional performer, I was excited to see Mark Morris Dance for the first time. I was shocked at how underwhelmed I was. What struck me most was the total lack of technique. I understand modern dance is a different style, but what I saw was mediocre and a total lack of any type of athleticism. Some dancers had pointed toes (Aaron) while others (the tall center girl from the Schumann piece) seemed to have flat concrete shoes attached to their feet. Most of what I saw last night had absolutely no soul. Empire Garden was excruciating and something I feel I could put together with a group of amateurs. If I said "everyone imitate a marching band!" that is what we would see I guess. Sport was cute and fun but again, watching dancers not dancing is not my idea of art. I guess flat feet and no jumps or turns could be excused for an emotional journey but we certainly weren't offered that either. I went in expecting to be moved, to feel something and left feeling blank. Most people around us were very disconnected, shifting looking around to find something more stimulating in the theater to watch. I enjoy going to NYC Ballet and always want their contemporary-ish pieces to push the envelope more, but will stick with paying to see breathtaking dancing there.
