HMS Gannet was a Royal Navy Doterel-class screw sloop-of-war, launched in Aug-1878. The primary purpose of ships of this class was to act in support of maintaining British naval dominance through trade protection, anti-slavery and long term surveying.
After sterling service in that role Gannet was decommissioned in Mar-1895 and became a training ship in the Thames in 1903. Thereafter Gannet was mostly employed as a training ship for boys in the Hamble from 1913 onwards. She was restored in 1987 and is now part of the UK's National Historic Fleet, berthed in the Historic Dockyard at Chatham.
