Review of Schoen Builders

Choosing to build a home with Schoen Builders has ...

Choosing to build a home with Schoen Builders has been the most regrettable decision we've ever made. Below we will list the problems we encountered with our house after moving in (which still have not been fixed - one year and four months after move-in), but the most appalling part of our experience was not that we encountered problems, but how they were handled. The cost to fix our house is highly expensive, so the way Schoen Builders has dealt with our situation was to initially ignore it. After we persisted, eventually needing to hire an attorney, Aaron Schoen had neighbors in our neighborhood put up signs supporting him and told people we were lying. These neighbors have never met us or personally inquired about experience and one neighbor didn't even build with Schoen, they bought their house from the previous owner. These people are protecting their own investment, but they should know both sides - how would they like to be in our shoes? When we posted reviews, Schoen Builders had people comment that they were "funny" and made mock reviews. (It's not funny to raise your children in a moldy house.) They have called us names to contractors and tradespeople we've had to work with to get out house fixed. It has been the most shocking, unprofessional experience we've ever had. A good contractor will stand by their work and Schoen Builders does not. These are the problems we experienced during and after our build:

1. Schoen Builders does not honor their warranty.

2. Our home has mold on every level within the subfloors and joists due to substandard building and lack of construction project management by Schoen Builders. Our family is living in a health hazard and we cannot sell the home as is. Schoen has been asked to remedy the situation and they have not.

3. All hardwood floors in our home are buckling, cupping and splitting due to the excess amount of moisture in the subfloor which was absorbed by the hardwood flooring.

4. There are structural issues throughout our entire house.

5. The cost of the bid given to build our home was misleading and inaccurate.

6. Schoen Builders did not build our home within the time frame stated per contract.

7. We were charged erroneous charges that we did not approved.

8. We were lied to about issues we experienced.

9. Once paid in full they did not return to finish our punch list or address any of the issues that arose later.

10. Defamation of character.

Building a house is very large investment, and the builder you entrust with your money should be trustworthy. We hope no family ever has to experience what we've been through!!!
