I had surgery at Rose--had always heard awful things, but had no choice. Three days before the surgery the hospital called me to demand payment in advance, and stated that the payment was for my deductible plus coinsurance of the remaining amount that would be billed through insurance. I was on vacation and with my kids, so I paid without doing the research I usually would (and should) have.

A month later I find out that the charge is not covered because Rose failed to get prior authorization, which means that I should owe nothing (they didn't comply with their insurance contract). I called Rose's billing department, and they refuse to refund the charge (for money I don't owe and they aren't entitled to keep). They know that I am solvent and can certainly pay what I ACTUALLY owe if they succeed in their appeal with the insurance company, but don't care.

Also there was in-process patchy paint in the hospital and the nurses couldn't tell me basic things about the surgery post-op. But I wouldn't have complained about that stuff if not for this wildly unethical billing practice.

In the future, I would literally change doctors to avoid going to this hospital.
