Absolutely abhorrent care. Do not go here. Do not ...
Absolutely abhorrent care. Do not go here. Do not send your family here. The staff is unprofessional and emotionally and verbally abusive to patients. If you want your loved ones to become MORE suicidal, send them here.
I was put on medication while there, which us the only help you will receive. There is only a social worker to set you up with outpatient treatment and a doctor who will prescribe meds. No therapy at all. Most group sessions were canceled. The nurses would leave the TV on and call it "Cinema Therapy".
I was set up with an outpatient medication evaluation for the day I was discharging from Highlands. I was never told about this appointment and even if I were told, I was still in the hospital, therefore unable to make it. I found out about the missed appointment a month later when I had my outpatient therapy appointment. By that time I was running out of medication but could not get into the outpatient psychiatric appointment for 3 weeks. The psychiatric place told me to call Highlands and have my doctor call in a prescription.
I called Highlands 8 times in 6 days. I kept getting told the doctor would call me and/or call in the prescription. He did not. The 9th call someone called me back (who received my message from the Chief Nursing Officer) and she said she would call me back after talking to the doctor to have him call in a refill. She never called back. On the advice of my pharmacist, who had also been waiting on a response from Highlands for 6 days, I drove 2.5 hours to Highlands to talk to someone in person about getting the med refill. After an aide tried to get in touch with several people (social worker, doctors) she said she would take down my info and have another doctor call in my prescriptions. After 3 hours, the prescriptions were not called in. I was completely distraught at this point. I went to a crisis center for help but the only thing I could do was check myself back into a crisis unit. The next day I was able to get my prescriptions refilled.
My time inside Highlands was stressful and traumatic and I continue to be traumatized after leaving.
