Purchasing the extra "Best purchase guarantee" option to be able to cancel refers to the day of purchase, not the day of the flight... even still, this is their policy:

Cancellations:
This booking can be cancelled up to the 10:00 PM Eastern Standard Time (EST) for a MINIMUM fee of CAD $ 50, per passenger, on the day the booking was done.

***So the man on the phone (daniel) told me "this means it could be $50 or $5,000".

I Wanted to cancel due to my wife's health condition.... couldn't.
Lastly, (mark) hung up on me while I was talking.
