Would recommend taking a guided tour of the park instead of just going up into the arch to see St Louis. The only thing that made the visit unpleasant was one of the security personnel. I'm sure it gets annoying having to say the same thing multiple times every day but that comes with that type of job. There were people who didn't speak English and the guy was screaming at them to take off their coats and belts. He had these people shaking in fear but he wasn't doing this just to the foreigners. He was an equal opportunity jerk because was rude to everyone who passed him. If you can handle being screamed at for about 3 minutes and not let it bother you, the arch is a fantastic experience.
