During birth my child's should got stuck and had to be forcibly pulled from my wife by 3 nurses and a doctor. Once out he had no pulse and was not breathing. The doctors at UPMC Hamot Women's in Erie performed CPR on him for 15 min before he finally came to life. They promptly put him into a "cold therapy" suit and within 2 hours of being alive he was airlifted to Children's. We really had no idea what to expect when we arrived at about 11 PM. Everyone was very friendly and we were promptly welcomed into his room. The NICU rooms only accommodate one parent to sleep in there at a time, so I crashed in the waiting room. The following 10 days were some of the most frightening/blindly hopeful of my life. It is a hospital, not a hotel, not Disneyland but they do try their best to make things as comfortable as possible. There are plenty of parent showers available on the NICU floor that are cleaned regularly. The meals in the cafeteria are just fine. The staff is quite professional and friendly. They have many resources available to help cope both emotionally and financially. Obviously, not all results are typical but each time we go back for a follow-up appointment I see the familiar red-eyed, battle-worn parent sporting the pink NICU nametag and want to tell them it will be fine and how well they took care of my son. He just turned 5 months and is still progressing normally. I don't know if he would even be alive if it weren't for Children's.
