Peter Halliday Review of Buckfast Abbey
A very impressive Roman Catholic Benedictine Abbey...
A very impressive Roman Catholic Benedictine Abbey, which celebrated its millennium last year. It has very brilliant stained glass windows at the East end, a comprehensive 4 manual organ, with chamade trumpets in the West gallery.
There is a very good restaurant, with a wide range of hot and cold food and drink.
There are shops containing religious books, cards, icons, records etc and also products made by monks and nuns from various Benedictine foundations.
The gardens are immaculate, toilets are impressively clean, and there is plenty of parking. Entry and parking are both free, the only charge is to go into The Monastic Way, an exhibition of the Benedictine monastic way of life, which unfortunately, we didn't have time to include in today's visit.
Several services are held during the day, and visitors are invited to attend most of them. Highly commended.
